Artist's Statement:
I moved to the United States in 2015 after living overseas for 16 years in four different countries (Taiwan, Germany, Turkey, China) and this move was the hardest for many reasons. I grew up in Miami, Florida, and we moved to Cary, North Carolina, again a big difference. There was so much going on politically and culturally from 2015 to present in the US that it really had/has me thinking was this the best move for my family.
While getting accustomed to this country I started teaching at Garner Magnet High School, also very very different from the private international schools I was working at in Asia and Europe. As I tell my students all the time, this uncomfortableness pushed me to think, to create and learn about living in this country again. This uncomfortableness pushed me to express myself in a body of work that I am so proud of. Each piece is personal and each piece tells a story. Please come by the show and see the stories I have visually illustrated with acrylic paint, ink and photography about living in the US as a native and immigrant.
